Week plan

This week i am going to:

. Throughout this week to try progress and move forward with our project we will firstly finish our story board and after we done that we will then do a production plan, for when and where we will be filming and who with. I will be looking at costume as i am in charge of mise-en-scene, i will be asking the band members their t-shirt sizes as we are using powder paint.

Papa Roach - Scars -

The song i will be analysing that uses Goodwin's Theory that comes under the Rock genre is 'Scars' by Papa Roach. So number one on Goodwins theory is that music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. This is shown in this music video as explained before in the 'Rock Genre Codes And Conventions' post, Artists, or characters in the video will be seen having dark black hair, sometimes long sometimes not, tattoos, and black hair.

. Second on Goodwins theory is the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. This is applied in this video when the artist 'Papa Roach' talks about the past and is reminiscing moments with his ex girlfriend. Another time when this is applied is when the artist says 'I just wanna be alone' and it goes to a shot of the woman sitting on the floor by herself with alcohol next her.

 .Third in Goodwins theory is relationship between the music and the visuals. This is also applied in a sense that because the song is very emotional and dark, you can see the setting is very foggy in the shots of the band performing in the middle of ruined buildings and in the middle of no where.

. Number four in Goodwins theory is the demand of labels wanting loads of close ups of the artist's face and that the artist may develop motifs across their work. This is applied in the video as the opening shot is a mid close up shot of the artists face. However there is not that many close ups of his face after that.

. Number five in Goodwin's theory is there is a frequent notion of looking voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This isn't really applied in this music video and this might be because of the genre of the music and that the song is sung by a male artist.

 Below are the lyrics for our chosen song "Back To Me" by Of Mice And Men. The song is about helpingsomeone through dark times and aiding them to safety. The song can be interpreted in two ways. One in a relationship type of way and one where a family member or close friend has passed away, either way both scenarios there will be someone going through hard times and need help and an aid to safety.

Rock Genre Codes And Conventions

ROCK GENRE CODES AND CONVENTIONS

throughout the genre there is a theme of being dark, emotional and meaningful. This is shown through the dark lighting in videos and photo-shoots and heavy, meaningful lyrics with a strong sound. Often, the colors black and white will be used to connote seriousness, and emotion.

 Long and/or wide camera angles are normally used to allow the whole band to be seen and to show music instruments being played. There are also close ups of the artists playing the instruments, this is to show the members individually and to create an intense feel to the video.

The Performance in most videos shows the band playing together and sometimes shows each member plain separately, or in some videos the band are shown to be playing separately until the last chorus then they come together to give the video a more dramatic ending. 

The costume of the band members are typically seen wearing black with leather jackets and ripped jeans and boots. this is to give the band a more powerful look. they would also sometimes have lots of jewellery even more typically they have messy black/long hair as this is used to create a larger head banging effect. they also typically have lots of tattoos showing as this is a connotation of being strong and also tough.

Rise Records is an independent record label that’s based in Beaverton, Oregon, America. This particular record label specializes in genres such as punk rock, and hardcore music so it suits our band perfectly.

Some similar artists that are signed with this label are ‘Fire from the gods’ , ‘issues’ , ‘five finger death punch’ and ‘cane hill.’

This record label is perfect for our band as the band specializes in their genre of music, and being an independent label they have a more creative control over their work.

Artist Biography

Jordan Tuck, Alex Stone, Jesse Axen, ace McKinnon and tom bane are five best friends from California Sacramento that have bonded over their love of music and performing. Since they met in high school they have played in concerts throughout the years with a band they formed in year eight called 'where the sun goes'. In 2014 the band split as they left high school, some of the members went to collage whilst others got jobs. However all members of the group made a promise that they would make music in their spare time. In late 2016 the band formed a new band called 'The Watchmen' this band played in their local bar every weekend until they caught the eyes of an independent record label named Rise Records. With their single 'Back to Me' due to be released late 2017 the band have had a new wave of ideas for a new album. They are heavily influenced by rock artists such as: stone sour, bring me the horizon, linkin park and royal blood.
