Today our teacher gave us feedback on our posts at this moment in time. As i am not in either this means I'm not doing excellent but I'm not doing terrible so I'm in the middle, so this means I'm doing ok with my blogs but i can improve them to get my name3 on the green list.

What is a music video?

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a piece of music or song. Modern music videos are normally used a marketing device.

Early music videos

The first actual music videos or 'promos' were filmed in the mid 1950's, however before then as early as the 1920's, but these were labeled as visual music rather then a 'music video' or 'promos.'

An example of an early music video is 'St Louis Blues - Bessie smiths/ 1929. Blues singer 'Bessie smith' appeared in a two reel short film called St Louis Blues.

In 1940 Walt Disney released 'Fantasia' an animated short film based around a piece of classical music.

1950-1960 development

in 1956 'Tony Bennett' was filmed walking along the serpentine in Hyde park as his song 'Stranger in paradise' played. This film was played by Uk and US television stations, leading 'Bennett to claim he made the first actual music video or 'promo.'

The defining work of the modern music video was the Beatles first major motion picture 'A hard days night' 1964. The musical segments in this music video arguably set out the basic visual vocabulary of todays music videos.

. So number one on Goodwin's theory is that music videos demonstrate genre characteristics and this is shown with this music video. Firstly this is a pop song and it shows the character singing the song within the video. Furthermore the woman ( Miley Cyrus ) is sexualised in the video which is also a characteristic of pop music.

. Number two would be relationship between lyrics and visuals. Throughout the song this is blatantly shown when the chorus is 'you came in like a wrecking ball' and she's swinging on a wrecking ball. Also another time when this is shown is when she says 'All I wanted was to break your walls' Which is referring to love and she is breaking down a wall.

. Number three is relationship between music and visuals. This is again applied to this video when the cuts in the video are in time with the drop on the chorus. And also the setting of the video being in an all white room with a broken wall and a hammer and wrecking ball.

. Number four the demand of labels wanting lots of close ups of the artists face and that the artist may develop motifs across there work. This is applied throughout the video as there is loads of close ups of Miley Cyrus and the first twenty seconds of the video is one long take of her face and her singing. In addition to this a motif of Miley Cyrus would be her licking the Hammer because it sort of represents her personality as she's wild and crazy.

. Number five is where there is a frequent notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This is applied in the Wrecking Ball music video as the singer ( Miley Cyrus ) is half naked throughout the video wearing just underwear, and through certain clips she is fully naked swinging on the wrecking ball. So this is most likely aimed at male viewers to draw attention as she is naked.

. Number six is intertextual references between TV shows, Films etc. However this music video doesn't have any.

. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.( pop music will include dance routines and women being sexualised, grime videos will include being filmed in an urban area).

.There's a relationship between the lyrics of the song and its visuals.

.There's a relationship between the music and the visuals.

.The record label usually demands that the artists face needs to be shown within the videos. the artists may develop motifs which reoccur within there other work. these include Cu's of the artists face.

.There is a frequent notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors stages etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

.There are often intertextual references within the videos (to tv, film and other music videos)

Practice music video filming

Our teacher set us a task to re create 1 minute of a music video, shot by shot exact. I was in a group with three other people and we decided that the music video we was going to do would be Drake- Hotline Bling. We had to watch the music video over a number of times and decide what minute of the song we was going to replicate. We decided that we was going to do the first minute of the song. We then got given a story board sheet and we would write each shot down and how long they are in order so that when we were filming we knew what we was doing and what order they go in when we edit as well.

When looking at the music video we was thinking of places that could be slightly similar to the setting in the video and we decided that filming in the drama room would be a good idea in front of the big white flats. When getting the equipment like the camera, stand etc, everything was pretty straight forward as the music video is mostly just Drake Dancing so as i was acting as drake i had to learn the dance move and every bit of movement he done in each shot.
