evaluation question 4

Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Within my group I had the roll of being in charge of mice-en-scene, working alongside Harry who was the director. This meant i had to make sure there was space available for us to film, find locations and I also done the lighting. One particular part that was really good was when we were doing the band shoots, I was playing around with the lighting and seeing which ones i thought would be best for the video and i worked out how to get a spotlight on Harry while everything else is completely dark. This worked very well because it excludes everything happening around him which gives off a feeling that its a live performance and he is the main focus which is what we wanted. This was thought of during the second shoot which means we developed from normal whole band shots into individual shots. In addition to this when doing the outdoor shots of Niamh i suggested to the cinematographer (Tommy) that filming outside in the sun meant that we would get slight sense flares which worked well with the song and its genre. It also meant that it gave the video a little bit of light rather than just being dark throughout.

Evaluation question 3

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Pitch- When presenting the pitch to the class we got good feedback in the sense that we had a clear idea of what we wanted to do. However we did get constructive feedback which helped us a alot. We were told that our Band was well thought out, in terms of names, background stories etc. However, we were told that our narrative was clear but we should try to include Goodwins theory. In addition to this we were also told that we hadn't included a logo which we then later on went on to do.

First draft- We had really good feedback from our first draft, but we also got constructive feedback as well. One thing the class said that worked was the mise-en-scene within the music video. So for example a specific time this was pointed out was when Harry was in the spotlight but he was just surrounded by darkness which really matches the genre of the song. However we were told that we needed to maybe change the setting three quarters of the way through to keep the audience engaged in the video.

Digipak- For the digipak we generally got good feedback apart from a few things we missed out on. We used photos taken from the band shoot which meant we were staying within our genre when doing the digipaks. However we did get feedback saying that we should include publishing information and the name of the band and album on the spine of the digipak.

Final draft

This is our final draft of our music video- Of Mice And Men - Back To Me.

evaluation question 2

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We used media technologies from the very beginning of this project to find inspiration, plan our music video and create our music video.
YouTube was our main source for finding inspiration for our music video. Once we had picked a genre we would watch music videos from that genre to gain some sort of idea of what we want to create. Doing this gave each of us an image on what we thought we could create so from there we brainstormed all of our ideas. Putting them together to construct a final idea that we would then create.
One the group members (Harry) would use Apple music (Media Technology) to listen to loads of music from that genre trying to find the song which we could create a music video for. This is how we found our chosen song 'Back to me' by 'Of Mice and Men'.
To Construct our music video the lead cinematographer (Tommy) used a Sony A6000 to film everything. To edit the video the lead editor (Max) used Adobe's Premier Pro which allowed us to create the desired effects of slow motion and colour correction.
Adobe Photoshop was used a lot during this project as we had to use it to create our Digi Pak and posters (Ancillary Texts).  Photoshop allowed us to tamper with the colours along with brightness and contrast of our images to make sure they looked exactly how we wanted them to.
DaFont was the name of the website we used to find the font that we thought matched our genre of music video. We picked out 5-6 that we liked and thought worked and then gave out a questionnaire asking 'which of these fonts do you think best suits a rock genre music video.
Blogger was used throughout the entire process of this project to record all the progress we were making towards creating our final creative piece.

The media technologies that we used for our evaluation were Word Documents, a video and a voice note.

Next Video Shoot

Next Video Shoot

The next video shoot is scheduled for the 8th of march at Danson Park. We are filming in this particular area because this is the idea that we had at the beginning to do the narrative side of the music video in an open rural area. The shots we are looking for are shots of Niamh (the girl in our music video) walking through the area alone. These shots are going to be put in slow motion when editing. Furthermore we are also looking to get shots of the main band member (Harry) walking by himself, with shots in slow motion and them meeting up etc.

Next Video Shoot Plan

Next Video Shoot Plan

For our next video shoot we are going to be doing the same full band setting. However, for this shoot we are going to be doing different shots and using a different camera as well. The camera we are going to be using is the sony A6000. With this camera we will be able to put some of the footage in slow motion which is exactly what we want.

First video shoot

First video shoot

last Wednesdays we done our first shoot for our music video. Within this shoot we got good band shots which is the core of the video. This shoot was very successful as the shots came out the way we expected and we particularly liked the fact that we could play around and experiment with the lighting board in drama so we managed to find the perfect lighting. In addition to this, due to the fact that the song comes under the genre of rock we needed a specific lighting which is dark, but still light enough that you can see the whole band and we managed to get this.

Video shoot plan

Video shoot plan

We planned to do our first video shoot for the band part of the music video. Within this shoot we are looking to get the core parts of the video, so this will be the intro and majority of the chorus, and also to get a few nice shots that can be fillers. We are going to be filming the shoot in the schools drama room which also has a lighting board so we can play around with the lighting and experiment and then decide on what we like best. For this shoot we are taking the drum kit, a bass guitar and an electric guitar from music. We will also obviously need a camera, but we are also going to use a steady cam as well.

First digipack design

First Digipack Design

This is half of the first design for my Digipack which is part of our coursework. The top half which isn't filled in yet will be filled in with pictures of the band (The Watchmen). The reason i have only used the basic colours of grey, black and white is because these particular colours suit very well with my genre. Typically a Digipack would have a picture of the band on the front cover, however i felt to move away from that stereotype and break the mould a little bit by putting things on the front cover that can be associated with the rock genre or my band in particular. In addition to this point, this is only a first design for my digipack and im aiming to make at least three or four to have a choice between them. I may go around my class and ask people which one they prefer most and use that as my final one.

New Story board

We started a new storyboard because the other one wasn't long enough and there were another few problems with it. So in this one we made sure that we added more shots and cuts in and was more precise with the timing.

Digipak Research

Digipak research

As part of or course we have to make a CD Digipak that goes with our song. CD digipak's are a modern stylish, alternative to the standard CD jewel case. They are a custom card packaging that can hold more than one CD, and the CD's are held in a plastic tray which are called CD flexitrays.

CD Digipaks were first introduced in the 1980's and but became popular in the early 2000's. These are especially popular in the music industry with albums. These Digipaks brought an expensive type of look so it drew more attention and made people like them more.

Digipak's are designed to fold into a square CD case. They can fold many different ways and can have different amounts of panels, usually six or eight. The front and the back panels are the main promoters of it, they are used to catch the audiences eye into buying it.

Goodwin's theory in our music video

How we are using codes and conventions

of Goodwins Theory in

our music video?

Goodwins theory states that there is 5 key features to a music video. These five features are;

. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics - In our music video we are very much following by genre characteristics, so for example, the male in the video will wear black ripped jeans, boots and either a leather jacket or a lumberjack shirt. In addition to this, we are doing quite a few shots of the band playing, which is ver common in Rock music videos.

. Relationship between lyrics and visuals- In our music video we are also following the theory that there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. We are doing this by when the artist says "Take a breath take a heart" the actor in the music video will take a deep breath while standing there staring into the distance or staring at the other person.

. Relationship between music and visuals- In our music video we are relating the music to the visuals. We are doing this by putting certain cuts in time with drops so for example there will be a cut to the band playing on the chorus.

. The demands of record labels wanting lots of close ups of artist- In our music video we are also applying this key feature by doing lots of close ups during the narrative and when the band is playing which will focus on the singer.

. There is a frequent notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors stages etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body- In our music video we ain't really following this feature as the song is more emotional and it only applies to a certain audience and we are not trying to draw a bigger audience by sexualising women.

Week plan

This week i am going to:

. Throughout this week to try progress and move forward with our project we will firstly finish our story board and after we done that we will then do a production plan, for when and where we will be filming and who with. I will be looking at costume as i am in charge of mise-en-scene, i will be asking the band members their t-shirt sizes as we are using powder paint.
